12/26/11 - 1/3/12: THE OCCUPY IOWA CAUCUS!
THE OCCUPY IOWA CAUCUS: GOALS

To focus attention during the Caucus season on the issues of the 99%

  • Our efforts are twofold: getting the message of the 99% to the candidates and to the media in a way that cannot be ignored. We will be taking our message calling for swift and potent political change directly to the candidates and their staff at their headquarters and anywhere else they will be gathering in Des Moines. Additionally, as a flood of national and international media descends upon Des Moines for the Iowa Caucus, we will make sure they are asking the right questions and reporting on where the candidates really stand on curbing corporate greed and political corruption.

To include non-violent civil disobedience in our campaign activities

  • Those of us who have tried participating in the political process through standard methods feel like we have been ignored. Our voices are not being heard over the roar of big money in politics and media. We will non-violently occupy these spaces in a way that cannot be ignored.

To educate people on the issues of the 99%

  • We will bring hard numbers, facts, and irrefutable evidence to the forefront of our message. We will back up our assertions with reputable sources.

  • A function of our occupation will be to shine a spotlight on the facts and numbers behind our grievances. We will demonstrate in no uncertain terms the truth of our accusations of corporate and political corruption. We will cut through the political spin and demystify the processes that have silenced the 99%.

To involve in campaign activities as many people as possible

  • Within our activities surrounding the Iowa Caucus there will be a place for everyone who wants their voice to be heard, whether it’s through occupying space bodily via nonviolent civil disobedience, speaking publicly, supporting education efforts, or contributing to the behind-the-scenes logistics. We need strong, quiet supporters just as much as we need bold, loud voices.

  • Additionally, this will be a place for spirited, respectful discussion and disagreement. Whatever our individual convictions, we will remember that we are united by the common cause of justice for the 99%.
