12/26/11 - 1/3/12: THE OCCUPY IOWA CAUCUS!
THE OCCUPY IOWA CAUCUS: THE PEOPLE’S CAUCUS

Occupy Des Moines invites our allies and supporters from across the country to Iowa, for a December 27 “People’s Caucus” that will jump start a week long “Occupy Iowa Caucus” campaign of direct action and civil disobedience.

The People’s Caucus will begin Tuesday, December 27, when everyday people and hardworking families from all walks of life will introduce, discuss, and adopt resolutions about the issues that matter most to the 99 percent and the Occupy Wall Street movement.  The resulting document will be introduced into the national public debate as one proposal for how the Occupy Wall Street movement should voice its grievances, turn sentiment into action, and take the power back from the greedy corporations.

The final document could be introduced int the Iowa Caucuses as a resolution on January 3 by Iowans who participate in the caucus process.

The People’s Caucus will also refine our planning for the next three consecutive days of direct action, occupation, and nonviolent civil disobedience, as participants will break into candidate “preference” groups - much as participants do in the Iowa Democratic Party Caucuses.  The difference is that people will be asked to stand not with the candidate they support, but with the candidate (Republican or Democrat) whose campaign headquarters they intend to occupy over the course of the next three days.

The People’s Caucus will end with a nonviolent civil disobedience training to prepare ourselves for the coming days of direct action, protest, and witness.
